Eastern offers scholarships funded through the ECSU Foundation, Inc. that are created by generous donors. There is no separate application process for the Foundation Scholarships. Eastern’s Financial Aid Office and academic departments work together to match students with appropriate scholarships. Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA by March 1 to receive the best consideration for scholarships and other financial aid.
Scholarship recipients are grateful for this support, and we encourage people interested in creating a scholarship to contact us.
The Dr. Jacqueline Abbott Endowed Scholarship was established by Dr. Abbott and her friends and colleagues upon her retirement to honor the more than 30 years of service that she had provided to Eastern’s community. This scholarship is awarded to nontraditional students in good academic standing and with academic promise who would benefit from special financial assistance and who wish to pursue a career in the field of education.
The Altrusa International Scholarship is awarded annually to a female student from northeastern Connecticut who can demonstrate a record of community service at Eastern or in her home area. Preference will be given to a nontraditional student who has completed at least one semester at Eastern and is in good academic standing. Financial need will be considered, but is not the controlling factor.
The ECSU Alumni Association Board of Directors voted in 2015 to form the Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship by merging two existing endowed funds, The Alumni Centennial Endowed Fund and The Alumni Center Endowed Fund. The resulting scholarship is used to improve the retention of academically high achieving students with demonstrated financial need. Criteria for the scholarship reflect those stipulations – it will be awarded to upperclass students with demonstrated financial need and high academic achievement.
This scholarship was established in 2018 and endowed in 2022 by Marshall and Angela Atwater, who were associated with Eastern for many years. Marshall was an Assistant Professor in the mid-1980s teaching meteorology and physics. Angela presented workshops at Eastern and taught for two years in the Education Department. Their daughter, Cynthia, graduated from Eastern in 2001 and their son, Matthew, took several courses at Eastern. Sophomores, juniors or seniors with financial need and in good academic standing are eligible.
Established in 1998 by family, friends, and co-workers to honor former Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs Stanley F. Battle, and Judith Roxie-Battle, this endowed scholarship is awarded to students who have academic promise and who would benefit from special assistance. The preferred recipient, who is from an urban community in Connecticut or Massachusetts, has demonstrated leadership qualities, good citizenship, and academic potential.
Mary C. Rogers and friends of the Beckert family established the Hermann Beckert Music Scholarship in honor of the late Hermann Beckert. Beckert served in various capacities during his many years with the University. The scholarship is awarded to full-time undergraduates with music performance involvement and a solid academic standing.
The Biology Fund was launched by Emeritus Biology Professor Barry Wulff and his wife Ella May in 1997 to support student-related projects in the department, including scholarships for Biology majors as well as student research, travel and programs,; it is now endowed.
The Polly Bogue '77 Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2021 after the death of Polly’s husband, Jeff, in late 2020. Polly was one of the first members of the Spanish Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi, and was very close with the late Lee B. Watts, who taught Spanish and Spanish Literature and headed Eastern’s Classical & Modern Languages Department for many years. Polly devoted her teaching career to the Stratford school system, where she taught, encouraged and befriended a countless number of elementary students as they began their journey through life. Polly retired in 2009 and moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, with her husband where she continued to pursue her passions until her death in 2016. The scholarship is for students with financial need with preference to those who are majoring or minoring in World Languages & Culture (Spanish or French) or minoring in Latin American Studies.
Bonzagni and Thomas Families Scholarship for for people who are active military, military veteran, first responder, or other public safety personnel (detention, corrections, probation, parole) or the children of the same who live in the 29 town Greater Hartford region.

Eastern Connecticut State University Veteran Alumni, community members, and others want to encourage, assist, and enable Veterans attending school at Eastern Connecticut State University and have sponsored this scholarship as a way to thank you for your commitment to your country and community.
Students who are receiving a book allowance (i.e. Vocational Rehabilitation, or by other means) are not eligible to apply for this scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist Veteran and Active Duty Military Students at Eastern Connecticut State University with the cost of their books, up to three hundred dollars.

The Doris K. Brown Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007 in memory of Doris K. Brown for Connecticut residents, preferably women, with unmet financial needs including fees, housing and course materials.
The Jeffrey N. Brown and Virginia B. Gascon Endowed Scholarship was launched in 2011 by Jeffrey N. Brown ‘79, a 2010 Eastern Fellow honoree, and his wife, Virginia Gascon Brown. The recipient will be a student in good academic standing with unmet financial need.
To honor the late Dr. Juliette P. Burstermann, Eastern professor emerita, Margaret S. Wilson and friends established the Dr. Juliette P. Burstermann Endowed Scholarship in 1991. When Dr. Burstermann joined the staff of Willimantic Teachers College, now Eastern Connecticut State University, in 1948, she became the first African American college professor in New England. Dr. Burstermann was the first chairperson of the elementary education department and was known as a consummate professional who gave her absolute best to her students. Awarded to an education major demonstrating academic promise and financial need.
The Paul Burton Scholarship was established in 1999 by Paul’s family and friends, and was endowed in January 2000. This scholarship honors the memory of Paul Burton, a 1999 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University who majored in computer science. It is awarded annually to an Eastern student who is physically challenged and/or is majoring in computer science.
The Constance Campo Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Constance Campo, who was a longtime member of the English Department staff.This scholarship is for a non-traditional student who has demonstrated excellence in his or her studies. This scholarship is awarded to someone who has shown sensitivity to gender and diversity issues as did Ms. Campo.
The Arturo and Elba Candales Memorial Endowed Scholarship, was established by Dr. Barbara A. Candales ’74 and her brothers Robert A. and Randall R. A. Candales, honors their parents Arturo and Elba Candales, who were leaders in the Puerto Rican community in New London in the 1960s. The fund supports the social work profession. Barbara Candales was named Connecticut’s “Social Worker of the Year” for 2006 and had a distinguished teaching and academic career in which she was at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work for nearly a decade and was a recipient of Central Connecticut’s “Teaching Excellence Award.” The scholarship is awarded to a Latino/a with unmet financial need who has at least a 2.0 GPA and is a United States citizen. Preference is given to social work majors but sociology majors and anthropology minors are also eligible.
The Dorothy N. Carlyle Endowed Scholarship was established in 2008 by Cameron A. Carlyle and Dorothy N. Carlyle ’56. The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in good academic standing, demonstrating unmet financial need and showing initiative by working to pay for their own education. Priority is given to students not competing in varsity athletics.
This scholarship was started in June 1990 and is awarded to students with financial need. The scholarship grew eight-fold in 2022 thanks to a $200K gift from the Lester E. & Phyllis M. Foster Foundation.
The Andrej Cavarkapa ’09 Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2017 by the Cavarkapa family following Andrej’s death on January 31, 2017, and has received support from many people who knew and admired Andrej in his life and for his devotion to teaching. Andrej was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzcegovina in 1987, the son of Branko and Aleksandra Cavarkapa, and was four years old when his family moved to the United States. He graduated from Eastern in 2009 with a B.A. in Biology and Biochemistry and received his master’s degree in Education from Eastern in 2012. Andrej always strived to help people and to make a difference in their lives, and this led him to become a Science teacher at RHAM High School. Andrej was passionate about his job and making physics and chemistry accessible to all students. He had many interests including art, winter sports and music. This scholarship will assist Biology majors with financial need, with a preference for RHAM graduates.
Chartwells created the Chartwells Scholarship in 2008. It is awarded to current Eastern students demonstrating academic achievement and unmet financial need.
Built by contributions from members of the Class of 1959 following their 50th reunion, the Class of 1959 Scholarship is given to a student majoring in Elementary Education, in good academic standing and with financial need, who intends to teach at the elementary or middle school level.
The funds that make up the Class of 1994 Achievement Scholarship are derived from the dollars remaining in the 1994 Senior Class Committee’s account at the time of their commencement. The class officers designated the sum for a scholarship at Eastern. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time junior or senior with unmet financial need and a minimum GPA of 3.0. He or she should be involved in student clubs or organizations and community activities, and demonstrate leadership skills.
Graduating seniors in the Class of 2008 launched what the Foundation hopes will become a tradition by giving collectively to establish the Class of 2008 Endowed Scholarship named for the class. It is awarded to a full-time student who lives on campus and is active in a student club or organization.
Established from gifts by members of the graduating Class of 2009, the Class of 2009 Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student entering her or his senior year who has been involved in community and student initiatives while at Eastern and has a GPA of 2.8 or higher.
The Continuing Education Scholarship is given to a nontraditional student in good academic standing.
The Kevin Crosbie Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2015 with initial five-figure gifts from the Lester & Phyllis Foster Foundation and the Jeffrey P. Ossen Family Foundation. Kevin was the longtime publisher of the Willimantic Chronicle who was a fixture in the local community. The four-year scholarships are awarded to students graduating from Windham High School who have financial need. Preference is given to students who have indicated their intention to major or minor in music while at Eastern.
The Curran Family Scholarship was established by Professor Emerita Ann Curran in 2000, in honor of the following members of her family: Eugene E. Curran, Sr.; Winifred Moriarty Curran, a member of the Class of 1912; and Eugene E. Curran, Jr. This endowed scholarship is awarded annually to assist nontraditional students returning to school and majoring in elementary education.
Sheridan Vernon created the Jarrell Cuyler and Angelica Padilla Memorial Scholarship in honor of the late Jarrell Cuyler of Windsor and Angelica Padilla of Willimantic. This endowed scholarship is made annually, when possible, to a student with unmet financial need, in good academic standing, and majoring in social work/sociology/applied relations.
The Christine and Kenneth J. DeLisa Endowed Scholarship was started in 2014 and was endowed in March 2022. Ken has served as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Eastern since 2002. The recipient(s) must be an in-state resident who demonstrates financial need.
Madeline Bernstein established the John J. Delmonte, Jr. endowed scholarship in 1993 in memory of her son, John J. DelMonte, Jr. ’73. This scholarship is awarded to a student in good academic standing who is a Theatre major or minor. In Ms. Bernstein’s own words, the recipient must have a “driven passion for the theater in all of its facets.”
The Corbett DeVivo Endowed Scholarship was established in 2010 by Mary Lou Corbett DeVivo ’60, who owned and managed Willimantic Waste Paper with her sons Timothy ’89 and Thomas DeVivo before her passing in 2015. The company was founded by the DeVivo family more than 60 years ago, and now offers a full range of recycling, collection and disposal services throughout Connecticut and elsewhere in New England. The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior in good academic standing with unmet financial need.
This Scholarship was established in September 2018 by Timothy DeVivo, an executive with Willimantic Waste Paper Co., and his wife, Kerry. Tim is the son of the late Mary Lou DeVivo ‘60, a past recipient of Eastern’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Recipients must reside in Windham County and demonstrate financial need.
The Dr. Walter and Maritza Diaz Endowed Scholarship was started in February 2022 at the time of Walter’s retirement from Eastern. The minimum endowed threshold of $25K was easily exceeded due in large part to a highly successful retirement dinner that was held in Walter and Maritza’s honor in April 2022. Dr. Diaz was a compassionate administrator and advocate for Eastern students and mentored hundreds of students as an advisor to the OLAS and MALES student clubs. From 2017 until his retirement, he was Vice President of Student Affairs. The recipient(s) must be Pell eligible and in good academic standing from Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, New Britain, New London, or Waterbury.
The family and friends of the late Dr. Robert W. Dolph, a former Eastern professor of education, established the Dr. Robert W. Dolph Scholarship Award in 1996. The memorial-endowed scholarship is awarded annually to an education major who shows academic promise and who will benefit from financial assistance. Preference is given to students with a specialty in early childhood or elementary education.
Celeste Prussia ’83 created the Alf E. Dyrland Memorial Scholarship in memory of her late husband. Its aim is to preserve the quality of the environment and continue Mr. Dyrland’s goals and desires through present-day students. It is awarded to a biology major who has unmet financial need and is actively involved in a non-paid internship/practicum or research project directly related to the environment, either in a lab/field experience or the Tropical Biology course.
Established in 2002, the Eastern Chapter State University Organization of Administrative Faculty (SUOAF) Endowed Scholarship is awarded to an Eastern student with financial need and a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students who are involved in community service and whose parents or guardians are active or retired SUOAF members at Eastern.
The Eastern Connecticut State University New London High School Endowed Scholarship, established in 2000, is awarded to a New London High School graduate who will be attending Eastern in the fall.
Established by Eastern’s Executive Vice President Michael Pernal as he retired in 2013, the Eastern Employees Scholarship provides a scholarship of at least $500 each year for the son or daughter of an Eastern classified employee attending the university.
Funded by Eastern’s annual Bowl-A-Thon, the ECSU Foundation Community Youth Scholarship was started in 1995 and is awarded to academically promising seniors from six local high schools: Coventry, Lyman Memorial, Parish Hill, RHAM, E.O. Smith, and Windham. Students are required to be in the top 25 percent of their graduating class or scored at least 1,000 on the SAT. They are expected to be contributors to the high school and/or community in which they live.
The ECSU Foundation established the ECSU Foundation Scholarship so that individual donors may memorialize the loved ones of their choice. Gifts have been given to the fund in the memory of Franklin Prague, Karen Hall, and Biel Beckert. The scholarship is awarded to students with unmet financial need.
Established in 1996 to honor Grace F. Enggas, Eastern’s former director of housing and residential life, the Grace F. and David H. Enggas Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a student with unmet financial need living in a campus residence hall or apartment. The recipient(s), preferably a first year student, must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and have demonstrated leadership, preferably within a residence hall or apartment complex. Grace passed away in 2014 and her husband David died in 2021; his name was added to the scholarship in 2022. David continued to donate generously to the scholarship following Grace’s death.
The Neil R. Esposito Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007 by Marisa Esposito ’08 in memory of her father and is earmarked for a student in good academic standing, who has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (after their freshman year) and unmet financial need.
The Steven B. Everton Memorial Scholarship was established in 2016 by Psychology Professor Wendi Everton upon the death of her beloved brother Steven, and was endowed in 2017. Steven Everton also had a degree in psychology, and at the time of his death was a Human Service Coordinator for the Massachusetts Department of Development, and was a devoted advocate not only for the clients of his agency but for disadvantaged people in general as well. The scholarship will be awarded to a Psychology major in good standing and in interest in working in human services. Preference will be given to students from Massachusetts.
Shawn Meaike, an entrepreneur who graduated from Eastern in 1995, launched Family First Life, a national network of companies marketing life insurance, retirement planning and investments, in 2013. He has since directed the rapid expansion of the company, and in 2014 made a gift from it to launch the Family First Life scholarship. The scholarship was endowed in 2016 following additional company gifts. It is awarded to a student(s) from New London County with financial need and in good academic standing.
Established in 2005 by Emeriti Professors John P. Listro, William T. Sisco and Ralph E. Webb, the Founders of Accounting Scholarship is awarded to an Accounting major with unmet financial need. In addition, the recipient will possess leadership and citizenship qualities, and will have earned a minimum GPA of 3.2, 15 credits of Accounting at Eastern, and 75 credits overall.
Established by Biology Professor Michael Gable upon his 2008 retirement from Eastern, the Michael F. Gable Biology Student Assistantships Endowed Fund is for biology and biochemistry majors who have served biology teaching assistantships and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Recipients are chosen by the Department of Biology. In 2022, a traditional Foundation scholarship(s) was added for bio/biochem majors who have participated in a research project with an Eastern faculty member.
The Thomas W. Gavigan Endowed Scholarship was established by Thomas Gavigan ’49 in 2007 for students who are attending Eastern Connecticut State University and have unmet financial need.
Friends and colleagues of Francis E. Geissler initially funded the Francis E. and Dorothy M. Geissler Memorial Endowed Scholarship in honor of his retirement in 1977, following many years of service as an Eastern administrator and coach. With the passing of Dorothy (February 2007) and Francis (July 2009) and at the request of the Geissler children, the name of this scholarship was changed to the Francis E. and Dorothy M. Geissler Memorial Endowed Scholarship to honor the contributions to Eastern of both Francis and his wife of 67 years. This award is for a student who has completed two years at Eastern, is going to be a junior, has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, and has made an outstanding contribution to the college community through leadership in extra-curricular activities.
Established in 2010 to honor Dr. Green’s more than a decade of service to Eastern as Chief Diversity Officer and Executive Assistant to the President, the Constance Belton Green Endowed Scholarship was initially funded with contributions by Eastern faculty and staff and friends of Dr. Green outside of the university. It is awarded to a student or students demonstrating academic promise and financial need. Recipients will be from an urban community in Connecticut and will have demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity and inclusion.
The Todd S. Greenberg Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in November 2016 by Mimi and Glen Greenberg, Todd’s sister and brother. Todd died in June 1987. He was President of Arctic Kold Refrigeration, Co., and the son of the late Sidney Greenberg, at the time the president and CEO of Arctic Kold’s parent company, Birken Manufacturing. This scholarship is awarded to an Economics major entering her/his junior or senior year at Eastern. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need.
The Louise Guarnaccia Fund for Non-Traditional Students assists female students over the age of twenty-three in meeting emergency financial needs that may disrupt their academic progression ifunmet. The funding can be used towards modest tuition assistance, book/educational supplies, conference/educational event attendance, medical emergencies, and other unexpected financial obligations. As funding is limited (with exception, no more than $200 per student, depending on request), students will need to document how they will meet the balance of their need if it is more than the individual limit. There is no application deadline; applications are considered on a funding-as-needed basis and until the funding is depleted.
The Dr. Margaret Hebert Endowed Scholarship reached endowment status in 2019. Dr. Hebert retired in May 2012 after working with the STEP/CAP Program for 28 years. During that time, she had a profound effect on the lives of many students. It was estimated that Margaret helped more than 1,800 students to enroll in the STEP/CAP program, with more than 1,700 admitted to Eastern following the summer program. She saw more than 1,400 STEP/CAP students graduate from college. The recipient(s) will be a full-time STEP/CAP student with financial need entering sophomore year.
Gina Benoit ’89 established the John D. Heredia Endowed Scholarship in 1998 for a student in unmet financial need. The preferred recipient will demonstrate an interest in or desire to pursue Native American Studies or has made a contribution to Native American culture or studies.
The Edith, John & Chandler Hicks Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2007 for deserving students with unmet financial need.
Luva Mead Hoar ’42, a member of the ECSU Foundation Board, established the Luva Mead Hoar Endowed Scholarship in 1986 while a member of the Board of Trustees of the Connecticut State University System. The scholarship is awarded each year to a junior or a senior who had demonstrated commitment to the community, as well as to the University.
The Dr. Robert N. Horrocks, Dr. Daniel B. Switchenko and Dr. Neil Williams Founders of Health and Physical Education Endowed Fund was established in 2002 as the Daniel B. Switchenko Endowed Fund for HPE, and the name was changed and purpose amended in 2012 following the retirement of Dr. Horrocks and again in 2015 following the retirement of Dr. Williams to support department needs as well as scholarships. The scholarship will be awarded to a student with unmet financial need majoring in Physical Education or Sport and Leisure Management.
Founded by Barbara Cignotti-Huber and Barry Huber in memory of their son Adam Huber, an Eastern student who died tragically in a 2006 accident, the Adam Huber Memorial AccessAbility Services Fund finances a scholarship or scholarships of at least $1,000 each year to students who use the services of Eastern’s Office of AccessAbility Services. The fund may also be used to supply technology to assist students academically when their disabilities necessitate such aid, and for equipment such as wheelchairs to help in students’ daily lives.
The Frederick J. Hughes, Jr. ’87 and Virginia R. Hughes ’87 Scholarship was started in October 2022 with a five-figure gift from the couple. Ginny and Fred met at Eastern as undergraduates and were both Business Administration majors before Eastern had established an Accounting major. Virginia is a CPA who has spent the past 18 years with Mark D. Alliod, CPA & Associates. A partner with BlumShapiro (now CliftonLarsonAllen as of two years ago), Fred is also a CPA and a veteran of more than 35 years in the accounting profession before his retirement in January 2022. An active supporter of his alma mater, Hughes continues to be a regular guest at the annual spring Accounting Society Dinner. In addition, he spent countless hours on campus interviewing and recruiting Eastern students, and over the past 15 years has hired over 25 Eastern graduates. The recipient(s) must be an in-state resident, majoring in Accounting, in good academic standing (preferably 3.0 of higher GPA) and demonstrating financial need.
The Carleton P. and Teresa H. James Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007 by Teresa H. James ’49 to honor her late husband, Carleton P. James. The recipient of this award will be a student in good academic standing (preferably above a 3.0 GPA), majoring in Early Childhood or Elementary Education and preferably from Windham County. The student must be an in-state resident.
The Anita N. Jean Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in October 2015 by Anita’s brother, Paul Jean, and his wife, Anne Jean, three years after Anita’s death. Anita worked for over two decades as an accountant at Eastern and was a key volunteer in the athletic department. In 2007, Nita was the recipient of the Michael A. Atkind Service Award presented to her by the Hall of Fame Committee of ECSU for her exceptional service and loyalty to the intercollegiate athletic program. Nita’s deepest love was for her family. This scholarship will be awarded to an in-state student(s) in good academic standing with financial need. The recipient(s) must be involved in extra-curricular activities on campus.
In 1989, the year of Eastern’s centennial anniversary, Sophie L. Jenkins ’43 established the Sophie L. Jenkins endowed scholarship upon her retirement as the University’s associate dean of academic affairs. Additional contributions were made in her honor by her family and her many friends and colleagues. The scholarship is awarded to undergraduates demonstrating academic achievement and unmet financial need.
The Dr. Arthur L. Johnson Unity Endowed Fund was established in October 2000 by his wife, Dr. Marie Love Johnson, and their family and friends. A portion of the interest earned on this fund will be used to assist Eastern students-in-need and in good standing on an emergency basis and to fund an annual book scholarship for an under-represented student with unmet financial need.
The family of Paul E. Johnson, Sr. established the Paul E. Johnson, Sr. Community Conference Room Endowed Scholarship in 1999 in honor of Mr. Johnson, who served on the staff of Willimantic State Teachers College from 1948 until 1966. The scholarship is awarded to students in good academic standing who are interested primarily in Native American and African American studies.
The Andy Jones Visual Arts Scholarship was established in 2007 with funds collected from the sale of the “Connecticut Quarter” prints designed for the U.S. Mint by Andy Jones, Professor of Art. The recipient(s) must be a junior majoring in Arts and in good academic standing.
The Linda Alapi Juras Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 in memory of Linda Juras with a gift from the estate of her surviving husband Michael, directed to Eastern through their daughter, Lisa Girard, and her husband James P. Girard ’97. Mrs. Juras received both her bachelor’s (’71) and master’s (’76) degrees in Early Childhood Education at Eastern, and taught first grade for more than 35 years at Lyme Consolidated School, where she was named a Connecticut Teacher of the Year. Each recipient must be an Early Education or Elementary Education major or minor in good academic standing, with unmet financial need.
The Kahan, Kerensky & Capossela, LLP (KKC) Endowed Scholarship was established in 2010 by the law firm of Kahan, Kerensky & Capossela, LLP, located in Vernon and Storrs. The scholarship is to be awarded to an Eastern junior or senior in good academic standing with unmet financial need, preferably demonstrating an interest in attending law school, who has demonstrated a commitment to his or her community through service.
Paul Kaplitz established the Mae K. Kaplitz Memorial Music Fund in 1995 in memory of his wife, Mae. Her lifelong love of music, especially vocal performance, inspired Mr. Kaplitz to create this endowed scholarship, which is awarded to a music student active in the University’s choral organizations and demonstrating unmet financial need.
The KBE Building Corporation Endowed Scholarship (formerly Konover Endowed Scholarship) is designated to support students majoring in Social Work, who are from the Hartford area and enrolled full-time at Eastern. Recipient(s) should be in good academic standing at the University.
The John F. Kearney, Jr. ’75 Memorial Endowed Scholarship was launched in memory of John F. Kearney ’75 following his death in 2012. Kearney at the time was President and CEO of Titan Energy New England in Rocky Hill, a company that delivers best practice energy management strategies. He devoted his career in large part to addressing public policy concerns. He was on the Alumni Association Board of Directors starting in the late 1990s, and served three times as its president. This scholarship will be a minimum award of $750 annually when available to a qualifying student(s) with financial need majoring in Political Science.
The Elizabeth Y. & William P. Kelly ’82 Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by Bill and Elizabeth Kelly in 2014 and endowed in December 2015. Bill has risen in a financial career to supervising securities lending throughout the world for international financial corporation Bank of New York Mellon. He and Elizabeth met as Eastern students, and he attributes much of his career and personal success to his academic and athletic experience at Eastern as a dual Economics and Public Policy major and leading varsity soccer player. The Kelly scholarship will be awarded to in-state students in good academic standing who have financial need and are active in extracurricular activities on campus.
Established by Mathematics Professor Stephen A. Kenton in anticipation of his 2008 retirement from Eastern, the Stephen A. Kenton Endowed Scholarship is awarded to Mathematics or Computer Science majors who are in good academic standing and have satisfactorily completed two required courses specified by Dr. Kenton.
The KeyBank Scholarship was established in 2011 for deserving students with unmet financial need. Preference will be given to students majoring in business administration or economics.
The Megan L. Kleczka Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2008 in memory of Megan Kleczka, who lost her life in 2007 while a student at Eastern. Megan was passionate about issues related to women’s health, safety, equality and justice. Recipients of the scholarship are full-time students in good academic standing at Eastern and committed to women’s social issues such as sexual health education, sexual assault services and/or reproductive justice. Preference is given to students in the field of women’s studies, social work or sociology with unmet financial need.
This scholarship was established in January 2019 with substantial donations from Charleen Knapp ’77, ‘85 G, and her son Robert. Mrs. Knapp was a nontraditional student who attended Eastern while raising four children with her late husband Charles, a professor of engineering at UConn. After earning her bachelor’s degree and teaching certification at Eastern, she entered the teaching profession. She retired to assist with a family matter, but returned to her profession in 2004 as Supervisor of Student Teachers at Eastern for 12 years before retiring permanently in 2016. The recipients will be Early Childhood Education majors with financial need. Elementary Education majors with need may be chosen in the alternative.
Barbara Kniffin Lapp established the Howard S. Kniffin Endowed Scholarship in memory of her late husband, Howard S. Kniffin, and in recognition of the achievements of their son, Charles E. Kniffin ’76, during his student years at Eastern. It is awarded to sophomores or juniors who have demonstrated excellence in an independent study in their major fields.
Established by Dr. K. Narayan Kutty, an emeritus member of Eastern’s English Department, with his 2009 gift, the Kutty Endowed Scholarship is to be awarded to a student(s) with unmet need using the following criteria: Hispanic student in good academic standing majoring in Biology, Economics, English, Environmental Earth Science, or History; an African American student majoring in Economics, Environmental Earth Science, History, or Political Science; or a female student majoring in English with a strong interest in Women’s Studies.
Family, friends and classmates of Earle M. Lacey ’51, established the The Earle M. Lacey Endowed Scholarship in 1999. This endowed fund is awarded annually to a student majoring in education who works to improve the lives of those in economically challenged communities. The recipient must be in good academic standing and demonstrate unmet financial need.
The Dorothy Gardiner Lackman ’67 Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in December 2014 by the Lackman children to assist education majors at Eastern while establishing an appropriate legacy for their mother, who passed away in 2009. After graduating from Eastern, Dorothy began her teaching career in the Eastford School System. She started working at the only pre-school in her hometown of Ashford, Pompey Hollow Nursery School, around 1970, and was credited with introducing Montessori materials into a traditional nursery school environment.
Ellen L. Lang ’81 and James E. Watson, M.D. established the Ellen L. Lang ’81 and James E. Watson, M.D. Endowed Scholarship in 1998, originally known as the Ellen L. Lang Endowed Scholarship, and it was renamed in 2011 to recognize the role of both donors. The scholarship is to honor/recognize older, nontraditional students returning to Eastern to obtain undergraduate degrees. All candidates must be in solid academic standing.
The Anne Pisarko Mahalawich ’44 Endowed Scholarship was established in 2013 and is awarded to a student from a family that is a member of the Holy New Martyrs Church in Norwich and/or a student that attended the Norwich Free Academy. The student must be in good academic standing and have financial need.
Built by ongoing fundraising events by the M.A.L.E.S. organization, the M.A.L.E.S. (Men Achieving Leadership Excellence and Success) Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a graduate of Windham High School involved with at least one extracurricular activity at Eastern. Preference will be given to a member of M.A.L.E.S. or F.E.M.A.L.E.S. (Females Excelling Maturing to Achieve Leadership Excellence and Success). Ideally the recipient should be from an underrepresented population.
Susan McCray established the The Susan McCray Endowment Fund for Theatre Arts in 2002 to support student-related programs in theatre arts, and revised it in 2012 to add a scholarship component. A minimum scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded annually where possible to a Theatre major in good academic standing with unmet financial need.
Launched in 2011 through the generosity of Marcia McGowan, professor emeritus in English and Women's and Gender Studies, the Dr. Marcia P. McGowan Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Women’s and Gender Studies is awarded to students majoring or minoring in Women’s and Gender Studies and demonstrating achievement through either research or the practice of principles in which this interdisciplinary subject is grounded.
The Dr. J. Donald McLaughlin Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 by Dr. Robert Jennette, Eastern’s Director of Health Services, to honor Dr. McLaughlin, Eastern’s first physician. It is intended to support deserving students with financial need who are planning to serve others as health professionals, to teach others as medical educators, or to engage in biomedical research.
The Ann W. McMann ’21 Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in November 2017 from a disbursement from the estate of Jacqueline M. Holbrook, who was McMann's daughter. (She died in July 2016) Ms. Holbrook and Ms. McMann were both educators. Recipients must be Connecticut residents, at least sophomores, majoring in Education, and in good academic standing.
William Meehan ’65/’70 and Virginia Meehan ’68 established the The Meehan & Daughters Real Estate and Development Endowed Scholarship in 1997 to honor William J. and Irene Meehan, and Hazel and Stanley Sheldon Sr. It is awarded to a junior who has a minimum GPA of 2.9, has good academic promise, and unmet financial need. The donors ask that the student be from Windham, Willimantic, or surrounding areas, majoring in education, business or English, and have an interest in Canadian or Irish studies.
The Philip Morales ’99 Technology and Mathematics Scholarship is awarded to Connecticut residents who are members of a traditionally underrepresented racial/ethnic group, who demonstrate financial need, and who are enrolled full time and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.00 in one of the following four majors: Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Business Information Systems.
The Thomas Nevers Memorial Scholarship was established in 2016 in memory of legendary Connecticut coach Tom Nevers, following Coach Nevers’ passing the previous year. After serving in the Army in World War II, Nevers earned his degree in education at the University of Connecticut where he was a three-sport athlete. He later earned a master’s degree at the University of West Virginia. Nevers coached soccer, basketball and baseball at Nathan Hale-Ray High School in East Haddam for more than a decade. He then accepted a professorship at Eastern, at that time Willimantic State Teachers College, where he coached soccer, basketball and golf. His soccer teams had 14 consecutive winning seasons and were undefeated in regular season and regional postseason play in 1968 and 1969. He was a member of four halls of fame, including Eastern and Connecticut Soccer. The scholarship will be awarded to students in good academic standing with financial need who participate in extracurricular activities.
Luva Mead Hoar ’42 established this endowed scholarship in 1999 to honor the memory of her longtime friend, Bernice “Bunny” Niejadlik. Ms. Niejadlik graduated from Willimantic State Normal School in 1930 and earned her bachelor’s degree from Willimantic State Teachers College in 1950. She was a former chair of the Connecticut State University Board of Trustees and a past recipient of the ECSU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award (1970) and the Hermann Beckert “Friends of the University” Award (1989). It is awarded annually to a student majoring in education.
In 1994, the NRY Scholarship was established to benefit future teachers as well as honor three long-time Eastern education faculty members – Professors Joe Narotsky, David Rand and Ralph Yulo. This award is made annually to promising students in the field of education.
The Dr. Elsa M. Núñez Endowed Scholarship (formerly the President’s Community Endowed Scholarship) was launched in conjunction with Eastern President Elsa Núñez' 2007 inauguration and is awarded to a student or students in good academic standing with unmet financial need.
The Juan and Carmen Núñez Scholarship was started in 2007 by Dr. Elsa Núñez, Eastern’s sixth president, to honor her parents. The recipient(s) must be in good academic standing and demonstrate unmet financial need.
The Dr. Ann Marie Orza Endowed Scholarship was established in 2005 by Dr. Ann Marie Orza, professor emerita, who taught for many years in the Psychology Department at Eastern. This scholarship is awarded to a student who has a major or minor in Women and Gender Studies and/or a student who has made a contribution in the area of human rights.
The Peace Through Education Fund was established in 2005 by Barbara Zulick to honor her husband John M. Zulick following his 2004 death. A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, John Zulick attended Eastern on the GI Bill® and, after graduating in 1960, went on to receive a master’s degree from Eastern and his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. During a long career in education, Dr. Zulick taught at Eastern and later returned as acting dean of continuing education. The award is given to an Eastern student studying abroad. Preference is given to Education majors and students demonstrating unmet financial need.

In 2002 Sheridan Vernon created the Daniel Pearl Memorial Scholarship in honor of the late Daniel Pearl. This endowed scholarship is made annually to a student in good academic and community standing, majoring in communication or political science, with an interest in international affairs.
The David and Janet Philips Endowed Scholarship was established in 1990 by Donald Philips in honor of his parents and their commitment and longstanding association with Eastern. David Philips taught in the English Department at Eastern for 28 years. He was well known for his storytelling and published Legendary Connecticut, a collection of folklore. He volunteered in many capacities in the Windham community. Janet Philips is remembered as a quiet leader. She worked in the Windham Town Hall for many years. She also volunteered her time and talents to numerous local organizations. The scholarship is awarded to an excellent student who is either an English major or a Theater major, with preference for a student who is majoring in both or heavily involved in both areas.
The Franklin and Edith Prague Endowed Centennial Scholarship was established in 1989 by Senator Prague and her husband in honor of Eastern’s centennial anniversary. The scholarship is awarded to students from New London, Tolland or Windham County who have at least a 3.0 GPA, and may be renewed by students maintaining their averages at that level or above.
Launched in 2002 to support classes in peace and human rights studies, the Virginia and Charles Prewitt Peace and Human Rights Studies Endowment Scholarship's purpose was subsequently expanded to support a scholarship to a student committed to its ideals. When Dr. Prewitt made another major gift in 2011, a room was dedicated to commemorate the gift and support peace and human rights activities on campus. Recipients of the scholarship are students who minor in peace and human rights or exhibits advocacy for those ideals.
The Arnold Prince Art Fund Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 and endowed in 2016 by Emerita Art Professor Claudia Widdiss to honor the memory of her late husband, sculptor and teacher Arnold Prince. Arnold was an accomplished sculptor, longtime sculpture professor at the Rhode Island School of Design and author of an instructional book on the art of sculpture, Carving Wood and Stone. He inspired and mentored many students during his long career. The scholarship is awarded to an Art major who has demonstrated a serious commitment to work in the art form of sculpture.
The Kathleen W. Roan Endowed Scholarship was established by the late Kay Roan in 2007 for students in good academic standing with unmet financial need. Kay volunteered countless hours to non-profits in Willimantic and was one of the longest standing members of the ECSU Foundation Inc. Board of Directors.
Awarded to a junior in any undergraduate major preparing to teach in elementary or middle school (grades 1 through 9), and with a course concentration in the sciences, the The Rogers Endowed Teaching Scholarship was launched in 2000 by Emerita Professor Mary Rogers Beckert, a long-time member of the Physical Sciences faculty. She passed away in 2010.
In 1985, the David M. Roth Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in remembrance of David M. Roth, renowned Connecticut historian and Eastern history professor of 23 years. It is awarded to a History or History and Social Science major with distinguished academic performance and with evidence of initiative and leadership in the field. The student will also demonstrate unmet financial need.
The Dr. Mohd Rujoub and Family Endowed Accounting Scholarship was established in 2015 by Dr. Mohd Rujoub, an accounting professor at Eastern since 1999 and coordinator of the Accounting program since 2003; the scholarship was endowed in 2018. The Accounting Program has risen in prestige under his tutelage. Recipients will be Eastern students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who are majoring in Accounting and have financial need.
The SBM Charitable Foundation Early Childhood Education Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2007 to provide Early Childhood Education majors with tuition scholarships.
The Tammy E. Schaeffer Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 to honor Tammy Schaeffer, a 1990 Eastern graduate whose passion in life was the Spanish language and culture. The recipient must be a promising student with unmet financial need, in good academic standing, and planning to study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country.
The Dr. Leo Schneiderman Founder of Psychology Endowed Scholarship was initiated by members of the Psychology Department at Eastern. Dr. Leo Schneiderman became the first psychology faculty member at Eastern when he was hired in 1956. He was a clinical psychologist by training with a background in psychoanalysis. Prior to teaching, Leo worked as a clinical psychologist at the Galesburg State Research Hospital in Galesburg, IL and the VA Hospital in Lebanon, PA. He also served in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1945–1946. Leo taught numerous courses that represented his devotion to students and their intellectual advancement–developmental courses, clinical courses, American National Character course (which was about the typical American personality), and Psychology of Literature, where students psychoanalyzed characters from literary works. Dr. Schneiderman received emeritus status in 2003 and passed away in 2011. The recipients are full-time students with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The recipients must be Psychology majors with financial need.
Established in 1953 by the ECSU Alumni Association of Willimantic State Teachers College, the The George Shafer - Frederick Noble Endowed Scholarship honors Dr. George H. Shafer and Dr. Frederick R. Noble for their years of service to Eastern. It is awarded to in-state, full-time undergraduates on the basis of academic merit, unmet financial need, and community involvement. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.7.
The Smith, Snider, Clebnik Founders of EES Endowed Fund was launched in 2009 to honor the founders of the Environmental Earth Science Department and EES major–Henry Snider, Sherman Clebnik and the late Raymond Smith–as Professor Clebnik prepared to retire that academic year. Income from the endowment is used to pay expenses related to student research, and field experiences, including off-campus field work and travel to related professional conferences.
On December 14, 2012, Victoria Leigh Soto ’08 lost her life protecting the children in her first-grade classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, from an assailant who shot and killed 20 children and seven adults that day. Victoria was a dean’s list student while she attended Eastern as an elementary education and history double major. Her dream job was to teach and nurture young children in the primary grades. She died protecting those children. Eastern started the Victoria Leigh Soto ’08 Memorial Endowed Scholarship in honor of Victoria and her heroism, to support students studying to be teachers who have unmet financial need.
The Dr. Robert "Buddy" Spillane ’56 Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in January 2017 by Buddy's widow Geraldine, Buddy's brother John "Jack" Spillane, and Jack's son Sean, for students with financial need residing in New London, Tolland or Windham counties. Buddy Spillane served as superintendent of the Boston Public Schools from 1981 to 1985 before taking over the 10th largest school district in the country, Fairfax County (VA).
The Dr. Darrell Stock, Jr. ‘80 Endowed Scholarship was established in 2019 at the direction of Dr. Stock, a pharmacist in Southern California. Dr. Stock majored in Biology at Eastern and eventually earned his Pharm.D. at the Roseman University of Health Sciences. This scholarship will be awarded to sophomores, juniors or seniors in good academic standing majoring in Biology, Biochemistry or Health Sciences with an expressed interest in pursuing a career in a health related field.
Established in 2011, the Student Government Association Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a student involved in at least one campus club or organization who has completed a minimum of 30 credit hours and has a GPA between 2.8 and 3.2. Qualification also requires a recommendation from at least one club or organization advisor.
The Student Research Endowed Scholarship fund was launched in 2014 by Dr. Marc R. Freeman ’93, a nationally recognized medical researcher who is now Director of the Vollum Institute at the Oregon Health & Science University, and his wife, Amy Sheehan ’93, with their substantial initial gift and multi-year pledge. This fund supports Eastern students for research work or research internships in the sciences – including room and board, research materials and stipends.
The Alexander “Sandy” Taylor Memorial Endowed Scholarship was launched by family, colleagues and friends of Sandy Taylor--a scholar, Eastern professor and publisher, following his death in 2007. The scholarship was endowed in 2015. The recipient will be an English major, and preference will be given to students who demonstrate a commitment to peace and the rights of mankind and to those who show an interest in poetry.
The recipient of the Elizabeth A. Thomas Endowed Scholarship will be a non-traditional sociology student who is a single mother, preferably from Bozrah, CT. If a student can not be identified who meets the criteria, a single mother with need may receive this award.
The Chance Dian Thompson Memorial Endowed Scholarship at Eastern was started when her friend, Nina Ruckes, made a five-figure gift to initiate the scholarship in 2022 following Chance’s untimely death on July 9, 2022. Chance was an honors graduate of The Sound School and currently enrolled as a sophomore at Eastern where she was majoring in history and minoring in anthropology. Chance had many passions in life from reading, volunteering at the Orange Historical Society (OHS) where she met Nina, and watching anime. The recipient(s) must be an in-state resident who is a History major in good academic standing.
The Traveler’s Award Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by the Travelers Foundation in 1998. It is awarded to Eastern students who demonstrate unmet financial need and are graduates of Hartford area high schools.
This fund was established in 2018 by Jeffrey Trawick-Smith, who was the inaugural Phyllis Waite Endowed Chair in Early Childhood Education at the Center for Early Childhood Education (CECE) at Eastern, and his wife, Nancy, to support undergraduate student research in early childhood education and development. The purpose of the fund is to provide assistance to undergraduate students who are conducting scientific, empirical studies on young children within the CECE. Studies supported by the fund will yield practical knowledge in early education and development and, thus, promote the well-being of young children and their families.
Barbara M. Tucker, professor of history and director of the David M. Roth Center, established the Ann and Kenneth Tucker Scholarship in November 2000 for Connecticut Studies. This endowed scholarship is awarded each year to one full-time student in financial need who has completed 45 credits at Eastern, is a History or History/Social Sciences major, has completed five history courses at Eastern, and has a minimum GPA of 3.25.
United Technologies Corporation established the United Technologies Endowed Scholarship in 1999. It is designated for graduates of Hartford public schools majoring in mathematics, science, or technology and demonstrating unmet financial need.
Sheridan Vernon established the Rosalie Vernon Memorial Scholarship in 1995 in memory of his mother, Rosalie Vernon. This endowed scholarship is awarded annually to an Eastern biology major in good academic standing with unmet financial need. The recipient should have an interest in attending medical school.
The Sidney Vernon, M.D. Endowed Scholarship was established in 2000 by Sheridan Vernon to honor the memory of his late father, Dr. Sidney Vernon, who practiced medicine in the Willimantic area for many years. It is intended for a student studying physical science, biology, pre-professional programs or biochemistry, or in an individualized program related to medicine. The recipient shall be in good academic standing and demonstrate unmet financial need.
Recipient(s) of the Veterans Scholarship must be taking at least nine credits at Eastern to apply and have served in the U.S. Military with an Honorable Discharge or Medical Hardship Discharge. It is preferred that the recipient(s) have completed a 120 day overseas tour and/or has been deployed to a combat zone. Any reservist, drilling reservist or inactive reservist is encouraged to apply.
The VSEI Award for Disadvantaged Students was established in 2022 by the organization Volunteers in Service to Education in India, Inc. The fund reached the endowed threshold in January 2023 (over $25K). The award will assist students with diagnosed disabilities from disadvantaged populations demonstrating financial need and educational promise.
The Lee (LeClaire) B. Watts Endowed Scholarship was started in 2010 by Dr. Steve A. Watts, Jr., in memory of his beloved wife, Dr. Lee B. Watts, who died in December 2009. Lee taught Spanish and Spanish Literature and headed Eastern’s Classical & Modern Languages Department for many years. She was credited with developing the Spanish major and internship program and founded the Nu Chi Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish honors society, before retiring in 1995. Lee’s dedication and passion for teaching and new methodologies gained the respect of her colleagues and students alike and in recognition the World Languages and Cultures suite was named in perpetuity in her honor. Recipients of the Lee B. Watts Scholarship will be students who have a sincere interest in Spanish and Spanish Literature and are in good academic standing.
Former Eastern President Charles Webb and his wife, Andrée, established the Andrée & C.R. Webb Endowed Scholarship in 1999 on the occasion of the naming of Charles R. Webb Hall. It was established to serve students in good academic standing with unmet financial need.
This scholarship was established by Clifford S. and Susan Williams in May 2014, with a four-year pledge, in memory of their son Nathan, who died while a full-time student at Eastern. Nathan was a student who valued higher education as a route to a successful future. The endowed fund was created to support male students with financial need who have exhibited a commitment to volunteerism and who are in good academic standing.
Established in 2008 by Dr. William Wilson, Margaret Wilson’s son, and augmented with earlier donations by Mrs. Wilson and numerous memorial gifts after her July 2008 passing, the Margaret S. Wilson Memorial Endowed Scholarship honors Margaret Wilson’s lifelong dedication and service to Eastern. Mrs. Wilson graduated from the school when it was Willimantic State Teachers College, later returned to teach here, and retired as Executive Dean in 1989. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate or graduates of the Norwich Free Academy in good academic standing and with unmet financial need.
The Windham Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., Inc. Scholarship was established in 2004 by the Windham Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company to benefit promising students in the field of business. The preferred recipient is a business major who has demonstrated leadership qualities and good citizenship, and is in good academic standing with unmet financial need.
Established in 1997 by Dr. Virginia W. Lowney and family members, the Henry N. and Frances Z. Winiarski Endowed Scholarship honors Dr. Lowney’s parents, who were avid supporters of education. This scholarship is awarded to a full time junior/senior with unmet financial need who is involved in student clubs and community service/activities.
Wendy Taylor Yaps ’85 & Everett W. Yapps Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to Eastern students majoring in music who have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing the study and performance of classical music. A strong preference will be given to those students enrolled in private instruction. Recipients must maintain an overall gpa of 3.0.
Dr. David Yutzey, a retired psychology professor from the University of Connecticut, generously established the David A. and Martha R. Yutzey Endowed Music Fund in 2011 as a tribute to his friend and musical colleague Professor Robert Lemons. Dr. Yutzey has played tuba in the Community Band led by Bob Lemons for more than three decades. In 2014, at the time of Prof. Lemons retirement, the fund was renamed to include David’s wife, Martha R. A portion of the fund’s assets will be used each year to provide a scholarship for an academically qualified music major with unmet financial need.
The Frances Karlyn Zittel Endowed Award was established in 1999 through a bequest from the estate of the late Captain Karl O. A. Zittel, USCG-Retired. The bequest established an endowment in memory of the captain’s daughter, Frances Karlyn Zittel, who predeceased him. Proceeds of the endowment will be used to support scholarship assistance for students pursuing a degree in the field of education, as well as for other programs that foster success for current Eastern students.
