The Dr. Leo Schneiderman Founder of Psychology Endowed Scholarship was initiated by members of the Psychology Department at Eastern. Dr. Leo Schneiderman became the first psychology faculty member at Eastern when he was hired in 1956. He was a clinical psychologist by training with a background in psychoanalysis. Prior to teaching, Leo worked as a clinical psychologist at the Galesburg State Research Hospital in Galesburg, IL and the VA Hospital in Lebanon, PA. He also served in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1945–1946. Leo taught numerous courses that represented his devotion to students and their intellectual advancement–developmental courses, clinical courses, American National Character course (which was about the typical American personality), and Psychology of Literature, where students psychoanalyzed characters from literary works. Dr. Schneiderman received emeritus status in 2003 and passed away in 2011. The recipients are full-time students with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The recipients must be Psychology majors with financial need.
