Internationally recognized artists Laleh Mehran and Chris Coleman visited Eastern Connecticut State University on March 7 to discuss artistic collaboration and blending digital art with the physical world. Their presentation was titled “Where Digital meets Physical, Emergent Digital Technologies, Physical Materials and Global Connectivity.”
Not only is collaboration working with people of different disciplines, but Coleman and Mehran, both professors at the University of Denver, say that collaboration should start at the very beginning of a project. During the presentation, they discussed three of their collaborative projects: “W3FI,” “Transitional Fragments” and “Unclaimed.”
Their exhibitions, some of which have been shown around the world, utilize creative coding, videos, projections and sculptures. The interactive installations provide commentary on social and environmental issues and are location sensitive based on where they are exhibited. “Where Digital Meets Physical” was part of the Visiting Artists and Art Historians Series, which is meant to expose students and other members of the Eastern community to a variety of artists and scholars. The series is sponsored by the Art and Art History Department and the New Media Studies program.
Some of Coleman’s work will be featured in “Spectra,” the upcoming Eastern exhibition that will run from March 10 to April 21 in the Art Gallery of the Fine Arts Instructional Center. An artist discussion and reception will occur on March 10 from 4–5 p.m. For more information, see here.
