The Eastern Opera Workshop of Eastern Connecticut State University’s Music Program performed “Dido and Aeneas” on April 9 and 11. Written by English composer Henry Purcell more than 300 years ago, the baroque masterpiece “Dido and Aeneas” is a 60-minute opera with themes of love, jealousy, betrayal and grief. It is the story of two women, one motivated so much by jealously and greed that she will stop at nothing to author Queen Dido's demise.
"Dido and Aeneas" was directed by Music Professor Emily Riggs with musical direction by Professor David Ballena. It also featured the Eastern Chamber Singers, under the direction of Professor David Belles, and choral accompanist Eric Ouellette.
Eastern’s Opera Workshop is a course designed to provide students hands-on experience in stage movement, character development and scene study. Students develop skills while exploring repertoire from opera and operetta. The course culminates in an open presentation of the scenes studied and prepared throughout the semester. This workshop is offered every semester and is open to both majors and non-majors.
