Audio visual equipment is available at no charge to support Eastern classes and University sponsored events. Please see below for a complete list of the equipment in our inventory. Please contact Media Services for information on rental policies.The Media Services equipment loan area is open Monday – Thursday 8am until 9:30pm and Friday from 8am until 4:30pm. Our office is located in Communication 125.

Data Projector
Portable data projectors are available to Eastern faculty and staff by reservation for the display of Power Point presentations and video sources.

Projection Screen
Our lightweight and user friendly Da-Lite Projection screens come in 3 different sizes:
60″ Diagonal, 80″ Diagonal, and 100″ Diagonal for larger rooms.

Digital Video Camcorder
These video cameras record directly to an SD memory card. Memory cards are available for purchase at the University Bookstore. Users may choose to edit their projects using software such as Adobe Premiere, available on all University computers, or personal video editing software at home.

Tripods
Our lightweight and durable tripods are available for rental for our digital still cameras and our digital video cameras.

Digital Audio Recorder
These Olympus digital audio recorders record up to 35 hours of audio in WMA format. Users have the option of recording audio using the internal microphone, or connecting an external microphone to the unit. The digital audio recorder comes with a USB cable to quickly transfer and playback audio files on a computer. Editing audio files can be done using Adobe Audition, which is available on University computers.

Microphone & PA System PA Systems are used for audio amplification for indoor and outdoor events on campus in areas that do not have permanently installed systems. Please contact Media Services for addtional information.

We have floor microphone stands, table microphone stands, and boom microphone stands for musical performances.

Microphones
Microphones can be used in conjunction with an amplification system in large lecture halls.

All of Eastern’s general purpose classrooms, instructional labs, and large meeting facilities are equipped with fixed multimedia projection equipment. Each podium is equipped with a Windows-based computer, DVD-VHS player, source equipment switcher, amplified audio system and a VGA/Audio cable for connecting external equipment to the system. Most podiums also have an HDMI (male) cable for connecting portable devices such as newer laptop computers, iPads and smart phones. Users must provide their own adapter for connecting to the HDMI cable. Multimedia Cart Based Description

It is the policy of the staff at Eastern Connecticut State University’s Media Services department to apply the Copyright Law of the United States and the Fair Use Guidelines for Educational Multimedia to all activities of the department. This information is provided for general reference and does not constitute legal advice. If in doubt, seek a qualified legal opinion from an attorney knowledgeable of copyright law.

1. If you are the creator of the media, and have not assigned copyright to someone else, then, as the copyright owner, you may have it converted.
2. If a digital copy of the media exists, it should be purchased.
3. If a digital copy does not exist, then the copyright owner should be contacted for written permission to change the media from analog to digital. To locate the copyright holder, contact the video’s distributor. For audios and videos from the University’s Library search the feature by title, scroll down to publisher, and the distributor will be listed there. Search Google for the distributor’s contact information. If the request is denied, the media cannot be converted.
4. If the copyright owner cannot be determined, you can visit the IMDb website for feature films, film shorts, and television programs. Enter the movie, or television show name, and scroll down to the company credits and obtain contact information to seek written permission. Another option is to search the Internet for the film’s title to see if the film has its own Web page with contact information. In addition, the Copyright Clearance Center may be contacted to see if anyone lays claim to the copyright. If so, written permission from them should be sought.
5. If none of the above work, only the portion or clips of the content, essential to the class, may be converted. 10% of the total is specified.
6. Media recorded from an on air broadcast may not be converted. Copyright law states that this type of media may only be kept for 45 days, and used once in a class during that time.
7. Clips from motion pictures on DVD (as defined in 17 U.S. Code§101) that are legally acquired and protected by the Content Scrambling System may be converted under certain circumstances (17 U.S. Code§1201). The media needs to meet all of the above requirements for converting media. Only short portions of the video are allowed to be used. Screen capture is the preferred non-circumventing conversion technique. If screen capture does not produce video of sufficient quality for the purpose of criticism or comment, then other circumventing technologies may be employed.

   If the requirements above are satisfied, you can bring the video (and copy of the permission letter, if applicable) to Media Services or the Center for Instructional Technology for conversion.

Eastern Connecticut State University offers residence hall students free, high-definition cable TV service, including a variety of channels, four HBO channels, and over thirty digital music channels. This is customized, bulk-feed type of service that is specific to Eastern. The channels are fixed and the service cannot be upgraded with additional equipment. If you are having problems with cable TV service in your room, please contact your RA or Hall Director first. They will guide your support to the appropriate service department on campus.

To receive these channels, you must have a QAM tuner (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation). The QAM tuner allows your TV to receive high definition cable programming without a cable set top box. Most, but not all televisions manufactured after 2007 have an integrated tuner that can receive QAM based channels.

You should check the specifications from your TV manufacturer to determine if it includes the required QAM tuner. It should be explicitly referenced in the TV’s  specifications. There are several types of digital tuners in the United States and not all will work with Eastern’s cable TV service.

• NTSC Tuner – not compatible
• ATSC Tuner – not compatible
• QAM Tuner – compatible and required.

Unfortunately, some less expensive TVs come with a low quality QAM tuner that may not be able to pick up all of the digital channels. Our experience has demonstrated that well established manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony, Sharp, LG, and Toshiba have performed better. Also, to receive HD channels, you need a HD-compatible TV.

If you are having problems with your cable TV signal, please contact your RA or Hall Director for assistance.

• If the jack is physically broken they will report the problem. If the jack is physically OK they will test it with a QAM Tuner TV.
• If the jack is working properly with the test TV, the problem has to do with your TV not having a QAM tuner.
• If your TV does not have a QAM tuner you have the option of either purchasing one or borrowing one from Eastern’s Media Services department.

The Media Services equipment loan area is located in Communication 125. A student ID is required and you will be asked to return the loaner unit at the end of the Spring semester or if you withdraw from Eastern.

If you would like to purchase a unit, they can be obtained online.

How do I program my TV to view the new channel lineup?

Consult your TV manual for specific instructions. Generally speaking the steps are:

1. Go into the TV Menu and select “Set Up” or “Settings”
2. Set your tuner for Cable or QAM (rather than Air).
3. Look for and select an option similar to “Channel Search” or “Auto Program”
4. Some TV’s require you to erase “old” channels and rescan in the new channels.
5. The TV will automatically begin searching to identify all available channels
6. After this auto search is completed, there should be approximately 60-70 channels available for viewing (if the TV has an internal QAM tuner). If no channels are available, it is likely the TV does not have a QAM tuner.

If you previously watched a program on channel 4, the new channel may have moved to a new number, such as 4.2 or 4-2.

Media Services provides audio and visual support for large events and conferences on Eastern’s campus. Some of the services we provide are:

To schedule support for one of your events, you must first request media services support through the EMS Booking process for your event, followed by an email sent to mediaservices@easternct.edu at least 1 week in advance, and 2 weeks in advance for weekend events. For video recording services or A/V Support for a weekend event, please contact us 2 weeks in advance. AV support for events is subject to equipment and staff availability, as well as weather conditions.

• Student Center facility and AV requests should be submitted directly to the Student Center staff at their email address: stuctrsup@easternct.edu.
• Fine Arts Instructional Center requests should be submitted to: faicmediaservices@easternct.edu
• Depending on the nature of the request, a staff member from Media Services and/or the Student Center may contact you to obtain additional event information. All service requests will be confirmed via email. If your event is cancelled or moved, please notify us as soon as possible.

Media Services, in collaboration with the Center for Instructional Technology and ITS Network Services maintains Eastern’s video streaming services.

Media Services manages and distributes a variety of video content for educational, instructional, promotional and entertainment purposes via Eastern’s YouTube Channel.

Media Services works with an off-campus vendor to produce banners for academic events on campus. Three weeks lead time is required on all banner orders. They require a 300-600 dpi jpeg, ai, eps, or pdf vector file design.

On campus installation of banners is provided by Facility Services via a work order request on their website.

Eastern currently has a digital signage system that displays information on 37 LCD televisions located in campus buildings. This information includes event bulletins, as well as general university information.

Student groups and academic/administrative department staff should submit bulletin requests in the form of a jpeg image (using applications such as PowerPoint or Photoshop) to Ashley Orcutt (orcutta@easternct.edu) in University Relations. This bulletin should contain event location, date and time and if possible a colorful picture representing the event. Text size should be no smaller that 40 pts. for it to be readable on TV displays. For assistance in creating your bulletin, contact Kevin Paquin (paquink@easternct.edu) in University Relations.

Residence Hall sponsored bulletins are coordinated by Directors in each Residence Hall. Please contact your respective Hall Director for information.

Media Services produces parking/directional signs for academic and administrative events on Eastern’s campus. Installation of directional signs is provided by Facility Services via work order request on their website. Please note, Media Services cannot produce advertisement, event promotion or informational yard/lawn signage. The campus digital signage service can be used for this purpose. Submit Request to Place Signs on Eastern’s Campus

Media Services can laminate posters and other materials that are 25” in width or smaller. Most of these requests can be finished while you are waiting at the counter.

Need a quick way to advertise your event? Media Services can enlarge 8.5” x 11” MS Word Documents into monochrome paper posters for academic events on campus. These lightweight paper prints are 31” tall x 23” wide, and can be created for you while you wait at the counter. We can scan a physical copy of your MS Word Document at the counter, or you can email it ahead of time to signs@easternct.edu

Media Services will videotape campus events as requested in advance by Eastern faculty & staff. Requests for event recording must be submitted by email at least two weeks in advance of the event to ensure adequate personnel and equipment is available.

Submit a Request

The person requesting the event recording must specify the exact date, time, and campus location of the event to be videotaped. If an off-campus guest speaker or lecturer is involved, a video/photo release form must be secured and submitted to Media Services prior to the event.
