Sabreena was one of Eastern’s two 2016 Barnard Scholars — an annual award given to only 12 students from Connecticut’s four state universities (Central, Eastern, Southern and Western). Her impressive research projects — several of which she presented at national conferences — and travel abroad helped earn her this distinction. Sabreena was also a student worker in the Office of Continuing Studies, a peer mentor, and a member of the International Student Association and Eastern’s Honors Club.
After graduation, Sabreena spent a year in France teaching English before beginning graduate studies at the University of Chicago, where she now is in the Ph.D. program in Political Science.
“The advantage of going to Eastern lies in the sheer amount of opportunities the University creates for students and the interest that faculty members take in the success of their students. “You don’t necessarily get that at other universities; it is an atmosphere that Eastern has worked hard to create.”
While at Eastern, Sabreena took advantage of several applied learning opportunities, including study abroad trips to the Middle East and France and missionary work in Honduras. “When you go out of your comfort zone and go somewhere that counters your worldview, your mind opens and you grow as a person.
“I definitely believe that my experience and education at Eastern played a vital role in helping me gain acceptance to graduate school. Eastern’s range of opportunities in undergraduate research and the emphasis on methodology in both the political science and history programs allowed me to enter my master’s program with a wide range of skills that set me apart from my peers and enabled me to show my professors at the University of Chicago that I was prepared for a Ph.D. program. My mentors from Eastern have continued to offer me unwavering support and are certainly part of the reason that I was accepted into the program.”
