The Art Gallery at Eastern Connecticut State University held an opening reception for its latest exhibition, “Precision: Illustrative Technique in Art and Science,” on March 22. To highlight the connection between science and art, the exhibition features 27 artists who use pencil, paint, brush and photo emulsion to inspire viewers intellectually and emotionally. The exhibition will be on display through April 25.
Gallery Coordinator Yulia Tikhonova welcomed students to a socially distanced opening reception on March 22 and introduced President Elsa Núñez. “We are not the exhibit,” said Núñez jokingly, as students gazed at her ready to hear her speak. “There’s such a diversity of creativity here. These artists transition from technical parts to medical parts, and it’s all very inspiring,” said Núñez about science and art joining forces.
“It’s the merging of art and science, and I would argue that the study of both is essential for each of our students,” said Provost Bill Salka, who also joined Tikhonova for the opening reception. “If you think about it, art would not exist without science and vice versa, because we need art to nourish the soul of our scientists.”
“Established in the polarities of cognitive and somatic, unique and mass produced, subjective and objective, precision is the detailed study of scientific facts, data and natural phenomena,” said Tikhonova. “Visuals depict neurons, cells, plants, human anatomy, geology, astronomy and consumer patterns.”
The Art Gallery is located in the Fine Arts Instructional Center. Admission is free and open to the public during gallery hours Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m., or by appointment.
