Pakdil and Beazoglou ’21 published in Journal of Healthcare Management

Eastern Connecticut State University Management Professor Fatma Pakdil and alumna Hannah Beazoglou ’21 have recently been published for their collaborative research titled “Monitoring Length of Stay of Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients: A Times Series Analysis Using Statistical Process Control.” The research, which stems from Beazoglou’s undergraduate honors thesis, was published by the Journal of Healthcare Management.

Focused on how to best monitor lengths of stay (LOS) for patients with acute myocardial infarctions (AMI) in U.S. hospitals, Pakdil and Beazoglou employed statistical process control (SPC). “Data were abstracted from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Readmissions Database between 2010 and 2016. A total of 1,491 patients were examined in the study,” said Pakdil.

The study found that LOS decreased from 2010 to 2016. In teaching hospitals, LOS were longer than those at nonteaching hospitals. The pair also found that on average, women have longer LOS than men.

While the pair hit a roadblock with the size and complexity of the study, they were able to stratify data based on multiple variables, making the data analysis easier and more straightforward.

With more than 25 years of experience in academia, Pakdil was able to mentor Beazoglou in both the research and publishing process. “My experience helped me identify the problem and research questions of the study, analyze the data, and organize the entire honors thesis with my student. It also helped me find appropriate conferences for Hannah’s study.”
