Eastern Connecticut State University’s Communication Department hosted students from Manchester High School (MHS) on Feb. 7 to experience Eastern’s Communication Department and television studio for a day.
MHS offers a range of media classes including broadcast journalism, which teaches students how to build and produce a newscast. To put their skills to the test, every year they attend the Student Television Network (STN) convention where they are challenged to create an eight-minute newscast. At Eastern, they had the opportunity to work with advanced equipment in the new television studio and control room while learning new skills.
MHS produces a show called “The Pulse,” which is a weekly program that provides news of the school and town. The show recently earned a Regional Broadcast Excellence Award from STN for best weekly news show in the Northeast.
Eastern Student Tyler Madden ’21, executive producer of ETV News and an MHS graduate, shared why the connection between MHS and Eastern is important. “I learned the fundamental principles of broadcasting from my teachers at MHS, so it’s great seeing this idea come full circle and current students using those same principles to create news.”
MHS senior Cameron Darcy shared why Eastern is one of his top choices as he considers where to attend college. “I’ve heard great things about the communication program here. I have a lot of fun doing television production because it doesn’t feel like a job.”
The ETV club produces a newscast that reaches the entire campus. The club gives communication students the opportunity to experience television production and prepare for real-life job experiences.
