In June 2015, Eastern Connecticut State University President Elsa Núñez will begin an appointment on the NCAA Division III Presidents Council. The council is the highest ranking group in the Division III governance structure and has ultimate authority for creating, modifying and implementing policies, as well as oversight of the annual NCAA Division III budget.
With more than 180,000 student-athletes and 450 institutions, Division III is the largest NCAA division, both in terms of numbers of participants and schools. Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes conflicts between athletics and academics through shorter practices and playing seasons, and regional competition that reduces time away from studies.
The Division III Presidents Council strives to be representative of all institutions across the division, with councilmembers coming from large, small, private and public institutions. The committee’s general duties include strategic planning, budgetary oversight and directing of Division III policies. Councilmembers meet quarterly at the NCAA National Office in Indianapolis, IL.
