Eastern Connecticut State University Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE) students won the Dee Perrelli College Bowl on Nov. 21. In its 10th year, the bowl is hosted by the Connecticut Association of Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance (CTAHPERD) at its yearly conference in Cromwell. This is the fourth year in a row Eastern students have won the competition.

The CTAHPERD advocates for healthy lifestyles by providing members with opportunities to further their professional careers through leadership, networking, communication and advocacy, by increasing knowledge and sound professional practices.

“We are very proud of our Physical Education Teacher Education candidates for their participation and performance in this annual event,” said KPE Professor Michelle Ferrer. The Annual Dee Perrelli College Bowl is a “Jeopardy” style competition, in which three members of each participating team answer questions related to physical education pedagogy, assessment, biomechanics, tests and measures, adapted physical education, technology and best practices. This year’s competing teams came from Eastern, Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) and Central Connecticut State University (CCSU).

The questions that students had to answer were created by faculty members at Eastern, SCSU and CCSU. The bowl was hosted by faculty representatives from each university -- Darren Robert from Eastern, Amy Gagnon from CCSU and Dan Schwartz from SCSU.

The team captains that lead Eastern’s two competing teams at the bowl were KPE students Savannah Johnson `19 and Haley Kolesnik `19. Also on the teams were Amber Lewandowski `20, Garret Lemke `21, William Keane `20 and Colin Campagna `22.

The Eastern students will now compete at the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) Conference in Salt Lake City, UT, in April 2020. Students from Eastern’s KPE program have also won the National College Bowl at the SHAPE Conference twice in previous years.
