Class Day celebrates sophomore students

Eastern Connecticut State University’s Student Government Association (SGA) and Office of Student Activities held the second annual “Class Day” on Oct. 15. This year’s event celebrated the class of 2024 — sophomores — who persevered through a challenging first year as college students during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

“This sophomore social event was part of an ongoing initiative by the student activities office to recognize the resiliency and strength of the class of 2024,” said graduate intern Joaquin Selmeski. “They started their first year during the pandemic, and now they’re a part of the revitalization of campus.”

Class Day occurred outside of the Student Center, and featured such activities as customizable license plates, caricature drawings and free food. Willi the Warrior made his first appearance of the semester to congratulate sophomore students.

Throughout the fall 2021 semester, several other programs have supported sophomores as they navigate on-ground college. The “Sophomore Resource Panel” helped students to learn about different ways to be involved on campus, and included staff from the Center for Community Engagement, Academic Success Center, and the financial aid and student activities offices.

“We also partnered with the advising center to distribute information to students on how to be successful in a non-virtual environment,” said Selmeski. “In November, we are working with the Center for Internships and Career Development to introduce the concept of ‘employability’ to help sophomores start planning for future professional success.”
