Social work students tackle issues with community organizations
Through service and outreach, Eastern social work students are immersing themselves in the community and gaining field experience. For a required course of the Social Work major — "Generalist practice with communities and organizations" — junior-level students complete 45 hours of work with a community organization. This semester, 12 cohorts of three to four students spearheaded community projects concerning causes they feel passionate about, working closely with a group leader from that organization.
Sunrise CT calls for students to be climate activists
Eastern hosted a presentation by the climate-change awareness organization Sunrise CT on April 6 in the Student Center Theatre. The University Hour presentation was titled "Climate Action for Connecticut’s Youth,” and focused on the realities of climate change and ways to get involved with the movement. Established in 2019, Sunrise CT is a youth-led organization that works to mitigate the effects of climate change and create jobs in the state.
EASTERN Magazine: Shrinking the STEM Gap
While women make up 50 percent of the overall workforce, they occupy less than 30 percent of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs. This “gender gap” is significant as STEM jobs are among the country's highest-paying and fastest growing occupations. Eastern is countering that trend, however, as the majority of STEM graduates in recent years are women.
Student Olivia Wronka crowned Miss Little Poland
Eastern Connecticut State University senior Olivia Wronka was crowned Miss Little Poland in September 2021 at the annual Little Poland Festival in New Britain. New Britain is home to the state’s largest Polish population and has been dubbed the name “Little Poland.” Wronka will hold her title as Miss Little Poland for a year and will have the honor of crowning the next Miss Little Poland on June 5.
Eastern to present ‘The Greenwood Project’ in remembrance of Tulsa race massacre
The Theatre Program at Eastern Connecticut State University will present a live performance of dance, film and poetry in its final main stage production of the spring semester on April 28-May 1 in the Proscenium Theatre in the Fine Arts Instructional Center. "The Greenwood Project: Against Erasure" is a multi-disciplinary collaboration directed by Theatre Professor Alycia Bright-Holland, who teaches dance and choreography, and Theatre Professor Brian Day, who teaches filmmaking.
CSCU president visits campus
Terrence Cheng, president of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU), visited Eastern on April 7 for the third time since taking office in July 2021. He discussed challenges and opportunities facing the CSCU, including budgets and enrollment, in separate meetings with faculty and staff. At noon, Cheng enjoyed lunch with Eastern students in the Student Center Café.
