Students volunteer at mobile food pantry

Eastern Connecticut State University’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE) deployed 10 student volunteers to St. Joseph’s Church in Willimantic on March 23 to assist with the Connecticut Food Bank’s mobile food pantry. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the students helped package and distribute more than 3 tons of food to 140 local families, according to Reverend Rick Haverly. This was the second of three service projects with the mobile food pantry this semester. The final event is April 27.

Eastern to offer in-person graduation ceremony for Class of 2020

On Sunday, May 16, at 10 a.m., Eastern will hold in-person commencement exercises for the class of 2020. The event will take place on the Windham Technical High School athletic field, adjacent to Eastern’s campus. In May 2020, due to COVID-19, Eastern’s 2020 graduation program was a virtual event streamed on YouTube. This year's in-person ceremony will provide last year’s class with an opportunity to experience a traditional commencement. Read Story

Theatre student Capri Agresta accepted into grad program on full-tuition waiver

Eastern senior Capri Agresta, who double majors in theatre and new media studies, was accepted into a fine arts master’s program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on a full-tuition waiver and graduate fellowship. Agresta will pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Scenic Technology beginning in fall 2021. “My time at Eastern has allowed me to build a portfolio that showcases my carpentry and drafting skills, which is helping to launch my career,” said Agresta. Visiting professor presents on evolution of ‘ecofeminism’

Patricia Glazebrook, professor of philosophy at Washington State University, presented “Ecofeminism Then and Now” on March 23. The virtual lecture covered the complex issue of ecofeminism, which falls into the category of third-wave feminism and is also considered an emerging area of philosophy. Read Story

University of Florida professor discusses Black American history at Eastern

Eastern welcomed David Canton, director of the African American studies program and history professor at the University of Florida, on March 17 for a presentation titled “The Study of History and Sociology Makes Difficult Conversations Less Difficult.” The presentation discussed the history and sociology of racial stereotypes and the disadvantages faced by Black Americans. Attorney Dana Bucin explains career as immigration lawyer

Immigration law was the topic of a virtual presentation by guest speaker Dana Bucin on March 17. Bucin serves as a comprehensive immigration lawyer at the Murtha Cullina law firm in Hartford. Among her many accolades, she was named to Connecticut Magazine’s “Forty Under Forty” list in 2019. In her presentation, Bucin shared current immigration law with students, as well as the impact of the recent presidential election on immigration policies. Read Story
