Music faculty perform in faculty recital

Faculty musicians from the Music Program performed a faculty recital on March 6 in the Fine Arts Instructional Center. The recital featured more than 10 compositions spanning 200 years of music, and featured David Ballena (piano), Morgan Lee (piano), Emily Riggs (soprano), Andy Peng (viola), Jeff Calissi (marimba), Rebecca Calissi (piano), Matthew Muehl-Miller (horn), Joshua Thomas (tenor saxophone), Christopher Howard (clarinet), Cara Cheung (violoncello), Anthony Cornicello (piano) and Rick O'Neal (bass).

Eastern Theatre to present ‘Blood at the Root’

The Theatre Program at Eastern Connecticut State University is proud to present “Blood at the Root,” a play by Dominique Morisseau. The performance will be available to stream virtually for two weekends, March 19-21 and March 26-28. The play’s title comes from the 1939 song “Strange Fruit” by Billie Holiday, who hauntingly sang “Southern trees bear a strange fruit, blood on the leaves and blood at the root.” The play is directed by students Massiel Evans, Edwards J. Lorsin and Austin Washington, and supervised by Theatre Professor DeRon Williams. Read Story

Eastern dominates LEC's weekly awards in 4 sports

For the week ending on March 7, student athletes on the men’s and women’s indoor track teams, women’s swimming team and men’s lacrosse team earned several accolades in the Little East Conference’s weekly awards program. The Eastern Warriors took such titles as Swimmer-of-the-Week; Rookie-of-the-Week; Relay-of-the-Week; Goalie-of-the-Week; and much more. Read Story

Mama receives fellowship to work on new book

English Professor Raouf Mama is the recipient of a 2021 Artist Fellowship from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. A recipient in the literature category, Mama is using the $3,000 award to advance the progress of his novel “Burning Candles.” He hopes to complete the first draft over the summer.

University Hour speaker describes inclusive online fan communities

Casey Fiesler, assistant professor of information science at the University of Colorado, spoke about online fan communities at Eastern Connecticut State University on March 3. During “Growing Their Own: Lessons from Community-Driven, Feminist Technology Design,” Fiesler discussed the growing representation of gender, sexuality and disability in fan communities. Read Story
