Biology student Megan Piechowicz was awarded the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) travel award to attend the Worldwide Plant Biology Summit from July 9-13 in Portland, OR. While at the conference, Piechowicz will present her research project titled “Phenotypic characterization and mutation analysis of mutants defective in anthocyanin and proanthocyanidins in the model legume plant medicago truncatula.”
Piechowicz will attend plant biology workshops, study presentations and exhibits, network with professionals in the field and more. The ASPB’s travel award program strives to grow attendance and diversity by providing financial support to students and people working to expand their knowledge within the field of plant biology. This summit is an international conference and is expected to have more than 1,200 plant scientists from various cities and countries to present and share their research. The conference takes place annually at different locations around the globe.
Piechowicz, who is vice president of both the Honors Club and Pre-Health Society at Eastern, shared her biology career goals. “My goals include a career in human genetics, which will require a master’s program in this field. My lifelong goal has been to communicate with others effectively to increase the quality of life.” Piechowicz has worked closely with Biology Professor Vijaykumar Veerappan on various research topics and lab work.
Established in 1924, ASPB is a professional society devoted to advancing plant science research and education. It publishes three journals and organizes conferences and other educational activities to advance the study of plant science.
