After graduating from Eastern, Alyssa accepted a position as a lead Pre-K teacher at an inner-city school in Bridgeport, CT, where at least half of her students were English language learners. After working in the classroom for two years, she went back to school full time to complete her master’s degree in Bilingual, Multicultural Education & TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages). She works with English language learners in the Stamford School District and looks forward to teaching full time as a TESOL teacher for young children.
“Eastern’s Early Childhood Education Program provided me with an education that fully prepared me to be a classroom teacher. The professors created a learning environment that produced a close-knit community of future educators. My peers became teachers throughout the state. We still share ideas with one another to this day over periodic lunches with one of our professors from the program, who continues to give us advice and new ideas.
“The Early Childhood Department at Eastern offered me much more than just the opportunity to learn in the classroom. I had the privilege of working for the department for two years, conducting research on early childhood development. While working, I had the opportunity to co-author an article for a journal and present at multiple conferences about our research findings. My position as a researcher gave me an alternative perspective to teaching and knowledge that I use each day as I work with children. The education I received while learning and working in the Early Childhood Department at Eastern is something I don’t think college students find very often. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from the professors and alongside the other students in my program. I attribute much of my success as a teacher to the education I received from Eastern.”
