The senseless death of George Floyd in Minneapolis is a painful reminder that racism and police brutality continue to inflict a heavy toll on American society.
While I recognize the frustration and anger felt throughout the nation, especially within the African-American community, I encourage people to voice their concerns openly but peacefully in response to the violence we are witnessing against minorities.
Racism and discrimination have no place in a civilized society, and they have no place at Eastern Connecticut State University. Now is the time for us to stay true to our values of inclusion, empowerment and social responsibility as we condemn violence, racism and bigotry. We also must remain committed to promoting and supporting a peaceful and safe campus environment, where all can study, teach, and work.
I pledge to ensure that everyone’s First Amendment rights, including the right of assembly, are fully protected on our campus, just as our trained, dedicated team of police officers continue to work hard to protect the safety of members of our campus community.
Each of us has a personal responsibility to be part of a safe and peaceful campus environment, one in which we can engage in a vigorous dialog on how to advance the causes of equity, social justice and peace.
Sincerely, Elsa
